Invisalign vs. Braces: Key Benefits

Invisalign clear aligners offer several advantages over traditional braces:

  • Nearly invisible:

Invisalign aligners are made of transparent, BPA-free plastic, so they’re virtually impossible to see. You can straighten your teeth discreetly without the metal look of braces.
  • No dietary restrictions:

Since aligners are removable, you can take them out for meals and snacks. There’s no need to avoid any foods (enjoy popcorn, nuts, apples, and more) - just brush your teeth before reinserting the trays.
  • Comfortable to wear:

The smooth SmartTrack® material is designed for comfort. Aligners are trimmed to fit along your gum line, and there are no sharp wires or brackets to irritate your mouth.
  • Fewer office visits:

With Invisalign, you’ll spend roughly 30% less time in the orthodontist’s chair than with braces. We give you multiple aligners at each visit, so you only need routine check-ups to stay on track.
  • Often faster results:

Many patients finish Invisalign treatment sooner than braces. In one study, Invisalign cases completed about 5 months faster on average, so you may enjoy your final smile sooner (exact time depends on your case).

  • Advanced Invisalign Technology:

Our office uses the latest orthodontic technology to improve your treatment. No messy impressions, and no guesswork. We also use digital X-rays and advanced software to predict and track your progress. This all means better fitting aligners, faster turnaround times, and more efficient treatment for you.

Invisalign Teen: Blue Dot Compliance Indicators

One of the biggest concerns parents have about Invisalign for teenagers is compliance. Will your teen actually wear the aligners 20 to 22 hours a day?

Invisalign Teen addresses this with a feature called Blue Dot compliance indicators. Each aligner has small blue dots built into the plastic that gradually fade from blue to clear as the teen wears them. If the dots are still bright blue at the end of the two-week wear period, the aligners have not been worn enough. If they have faded to clear, your teen is on track.

This gives parents an honest, objective way to check compliance without a daily argument. Dr. Boris reviews the indicator status at every check-in appointment and adjusts the treatment plan if compliance needs improvement.

Invisalign Teen also includes up to 6 free replacement aligners for the ones your teen inevitably loses - left in a napkin at lunch, forgotten at a friend's house, or dropped during sports practice. This is built into the cost of Invisalign Teen at BP Smiles, not an extra charge.

We recommend Invisalign Teen for motivated teenagers with mild to moderate orthodontic needs who can commit to wearing the aligners as prescribed. Dr. Boris evaluates each teen individually during the complimentary consultation and gives you an honest assessment of whether Invisalign, traditional braces, or a combined approach is the right call for your child.

Invisalign for Every Common Orthodontic Case

Dr. Boris uses Invisalign at our Queens office to treat a wide range of alignment and bite issues:

  • Crowding. Teeth overlap or twist because there is not enough room in the jaw. Invisalign can expand and align without extractions in many mild to moderate cases.
  • Spacing. Gaps between teeth caused by small teeth in a large jaw, missing teeth, or childhood habits. Invisalign closes gaps predictably with controlled movement.
  • Overbite. Upper front teeth cover the lower teeth too much when the jaw closes. Mild to moderate overbites respond well to Invisalign treatment.
  • Underbite. Lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth. Mild underbites can be corrected with Invisalign; severe underbites often need surgical orthodontics.
  • Crossbite. Upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth on one or both sides. Early Invisalign treatment can prevent uneven wear and jaw asymmetry.
  • Open bite. Front teeth do not touch when the back teeth are closed. Mild open bites can be corrected with Invisalign aligners.
  • Relapse after previous orthodontic treatment. Teeth that shifted back after braces you had years ago. Invisalign refinement is often faster because the teeth have already moved once.

"Invisalign is a great alternative to traditional braces and does a great job with crowding and spacing," says Dr. Boris. "Each case is different, so we evaluate what will work best during your consultation."

Not sure which category your situation fits into? Book a complimentary consultation and we will tell you exactly what is going on and which treatment options are realistic for your specific case.

Our Technology: iTero Lumina 3D Scanner

No goopy impressions. No gag reflex. No waiting for plaster molds to set.

Dr. Boris uses the iTero Lumina intraoral scanner at our Bayside, Queens office. In about 5 minutes, we capture a complete 3D model of your teeth and bite with photographic precision. You see your scan on a screen in real time.

"After the initial scan by our Lumina iTero, we present a ClinCheck which gives an accurate representation of treatment outcomes and expectations," Dr. Boris explains. "Once the ClinCheck is approved by the patient, we give the ok for the manufacturing of the patient-specific aligners, which arrive 1 to 2 weeks later."

The iTero Lumina is the newest generation of Invisalign-compatible scanners and delivers significantly more detail than older iTero models. More accurate scans lead to better-fitting aligners and more predictable results - which means fewer mid-course corrections and a smoother treatment experience overall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Invisalign hurt?

Invisalign is known for being gentler than braces. You may feel mild pressure or soreness for a day or two each time you switch to a new aligner, that’s a sign the aligners are moving your teeth. However, unlike braces, there are no brackets or wires to rub and cause painful ulcers. Most patients adapt quickly and report that any discomfort is very manageable and short-lived.

Dr. Pinhasov may recommend taking a dose of ibuprofen and switching aligners at night so you sleep through the initial tightness. Overall, Invisalign’s smooth aligners cause far less irritation and pain than traditional braces, which often come with wire pokes and soreness after adjustments.

Invisalign can correct a wide range of cases from crooked or crowded teeth to gaps, overbites, underbites, and more. Both teens and adults are great candidates. In fact, Invisalign now offers specialized programs like Invisalign Teen (which includes compliance indicators and replacement aligners) and even Invisalign First for younger kids in certain cases. During your consultation, Dr. Pinhasov will examine your orthodontic needs to confirm that Invisalign is suitable for you. Thanks to advances in the Invisalign system, most orthodontic issues can be treated with aligners.

However, if your case is very complex (for example, large jaw discrepancies or certain types of impacted teeth), Dr. Pinhasov might recommend other treatments or a combination approach. Rest assured, we will only recommend Invisalign if we believe it will deliver an excellent result for your smile.

Treatment time with Invisalign varies per person, but on average most adults finish in 12 to 18 months. Some milder cases can be done in under a year, and complex corrections could take a bit longer (up to ~24 months). Teen treatment length depends on the complexity and compliance, similar to braces. Dr. Pinhasov will give you a personalized timeline. The ClinCheck software will actually show the projected number of aligners and duration needed. Keep in mind, wearing your aligners as directed (22 hours a day, switching on schedule) is key to finishing on time. You may also need a brief refinement phase with a few extra aligners at the end to perfect your results, if so, that might add a couple months, which is normal. Overall, Invisalign’s total treatment time is very comparable to braces, and sometimes even faster for moderate cases.

If you lose an aligner, don’t worry it’s a common mishap and we have a plan! As soon as you realize a tray is lost or broken, contact our office. In the meantime, you should wear your previous aligner (the one you just finished) to prevent any relapse of tooth movement. Depending on where you are in the sequence, Dr. Pinhasov might advise you to move ahead to the next aligner a bit early or wait for a replacement.

We can order a single replacement aligner from Invisalign if needed. It usually arrives quickly (often within a week). To avoid delays, it’s best to be careful with your aligners: always store them in your case when not in your mouth (never wrapped in a napkin where they can be accidentally thrown away!). But if an accident happens, we’ll help you get back on track promptly.

Yes. After any orthodontic treatment (Invisalign or braces), retainers are essential to hold your teeth in their new positions. Teeth have memory and will try to shift back over time if retainers aren’t worn. The good news is, Invisalign’s retention protocol often uses clear retainers that look and feel similar to the aligners you’ve gotten used to. Dr. Pinhasov will provide you with custom-fitted retainers (usually worn nightly) and a schedule for wearing them.

Over time, you may taper down how often you wear them, but some level of lifelong retainer wear is recommended to keep your smile perfect. Our office will monitor your retention in follow-up visits and make adjustments as needed. Think of retainers as cheap insurance for the beautiful smile you’ve just achieved!
